Henever's Story 

A THEATRE-BASED PROGRAM ON BELONGING & CARING FOR OUR CHANGING WORLD

Henever's Story, Imagine's newest interactive school tour show for K-2 children, is an immersive, puppet-driven experience created for our youngest audiences. True to Imagine's Forum Theatre roots, children don't just watch, they become part of the story, uplifted by vibrant characters and physical comedy that keeps things joyful even as it opens up big feelings.

Along this one-of-a-kind performance journey, children meet Henet, a pelican, and Javier, a sloth, who have lost their homes to a hurricane and find themselves swept into the same unfamiliar habitat. Alone and displaced, they soon become the best of friends, affectionately combining their names to become "Henever." Guided by the North Wind and a company of wind fairies, the two puppets lead children through play, movement, music, and sensory exploration that build empathy, emotional regulation, and inclusion. At key moments, children step into the story themselves, using role-play to practice resolving conflict with a peer and finding their voice through self-advocacy. Along the way, they encounter firsthand how climate change touches oceans, wind, land, plants, and animals, and how, in the end, we are all connected and we all belong.

The process empowers children to take ownership of their choices and take care of their peers and the earth. The full experience unfolds in three parts: a pre-show classroom lesson with an Imagine Teaching Artist, a 50-minute live theatre assembly for two classrooms at a time, and a post-show classroom lesson that helps children carry the story's lessons into their daily lives. Alongside the school tour show for classrooms, Henever's Story also brings a family-friendly version to community audiences.

PROGRAM DETAILS

  • Launching February 2027

  • 45–60 minute pre-show lesson with an Imagine Teaching Artist in each classroom.

  • 50-minute live interactive assembly for two class groups at a time.

  • 45–60 minute post-show lesson with an Imagine Teaching Artist in each classroom.

  • Ideal participating audience: Kindergarten–2nd grade.

  • Suggested scheduling for an entire grade when possible.
